A Frederick County firefighter will be among those honored Sunday during a virtual tribute.
Although COVID-19 forced the cancelation of the annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend activities, those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their communities will still be remembered.
Memories of fallen heroes including Michael Powers, a volunteer with Libertytown Vol. Fire Co., will be shared during a video that will air at 10 a.m. Sunday.
America’s Tribute to Fallen Firefighters can be viewed at www.firehero.org.
Powers collapsed at a crash scene in 2019. He was one of 103 firefighters who were slated to be honored.
“We are planning to hold a double ceremony in Emmitsburg next October,” said Ron Siarnicki, NFFF executive director.
Some activities associated with the memorial weekend are continuing, he noted.
Red lights are being displayed on buildings and other landmarks across the nation to honor the fallen heroes.
“We’re also asking that people ring church bells at 10 a.m. Sunday,” he said adding that it's important that the firefighters' sacrifices are remembered.
