County Fire Marshal to Begin Implementing Inspection Fee Schedule

Frederick, Md. – On January 1, 2024, the Frederick County Fire Marshal's Office updated their inspection fee schedules, which will be charged for all preventative inspections in accordance with the Frederick County Fire Prevention Code.

Preventative inspections are required by Maryland State Law to ensure public safety and welfare through compliance with various fire and life safety code regulations. There are over 7,000 properties subject to inspection throughout Frederick County. Based on Maryland State Fire Laws, occupancies that can be inspected include, but are not limited to:

• Places of assembly
• Educational facilities
• Summer camps
• All municipal buildings
• Businesses
• State-licensed facilities
• Hotels
• Multi-family dwellings
• Stores
• Warehouses/storage facilities
• Manufacturing sites
• Certain special events
• Fireworks displays
• Food trucks

In certain instances, the Fire Marshal will be required by law to inspect privately-owned residential one- and two-family dwellings; these include, but are not limited to:
• Properties that are home childcare providers
• Foster care providers
• Prior to adoptions
• Group homes
• H-2A / migrant housing

The frequency at which an occupancy is inspected is dependent on a variety of factors, including degree of risk, the potential for loss of life or injury, and state-mandated regulations. The Fire Marshal is not allowed by law to give prior notice about an inspection. A breakdown of the minimum frequency at which occupancies will be inspected based on their degree of risk can be found here: Frequency of Occupancy Inspection.

To help assist in preparing for an inspection, the Frederick County Fire Marshal's Office has created a self-inspection checklist, which can be found here: FCDFRS Self-Inspection Checklist.

The updated fee schedule, which took effect January 1, 2024 can be found here under attachments: Frederick County Fire Marshal Inspection Fee Schedule.

For more information about the fee schedule, please contact the Frederick County Fire Marshal's Office by calling 301-600-1479 or email DFRSFireMarshal@FrederickCountyMD.gov.
