While doors of businesses and churches were closed due to the pandemic, that wasn’t the case at volunteer fire and EMS stations around the county.

Despite COVID concerns, volunteer crews remained vigilant and continued to respond to calls in their communities.

The efforts were lauded Monday night during the annual awards ceremony of the Frederick County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association.

County Executive Jan Gardner said she and other county officials were aware of the contributions of the volunteers. She said it was impressive to see the teamwork involved.

In addition to responding to emergencies, several dozen volunteers took additional training to help vaccinate residents at local clinics.

FCVFRA President Alan Hurley added: “This past year and a half has been challenging for emergency services, and I want you all to know that your hard work is sincerely appreciated. Your continued dedication to your communities through these hard times defines what it means to be a volunteer.”

Mentioning the fire service history in the county, Hurley noted: “We have seen increasing safety measures, updated gear and equipment but one thing remains the same, the commitment of our volunteers.”

In addition to individual awards handed out at the event in Walkersville, several people were selected to the FCVFRA Hall of Fame for their contributions.

They include Charlotte Barnhouse and Debra Ferrell, Brunswick Vol. Ambulance and Rescue Co. Auxiliary; David Beaulieu (posthumously) and Richard Keyser Sr., Middletown; Martha Norwood and Ronald “Bull” Witt, Urbana; Jim Rice, Rocky Ridge; Louis Powell, Graceham; Gerald Wayne Stull, Lewistown and Michael R. I'm proud to be a member of the volunteer Fire Fighter and EMS community in Frederick MD. The awards given this year (and every year) are well deserved by folks of different ages who give of their time and effort in helping our community in front and behind the lines. Kudos to all of the recipients.
